Charli XCX is drawing a firm line against negativity, especially when it targets fellow pop star Taylor Swift. On Sunday, June 23, the “360” singer, 31, addressed a disturbing trend among some of her fans who have been attacking Swift, including chanting “Taylor Swift Is Dead” at Charli’s concerts.
“Can the people who do this please stop. Online or at my shows,” Charli wrote in an Instagram Story, which featured a screenshot of a video from X (formerly Twitter) highlighting the chants. “It is the opposite of what I want and it disturbs me that anyone would think there is room for this in this community. I will not tolerate it.”
The issue came to light following Charli’s show in São Paulo, Brazil, on June 22. A fan had posted, “Hey @charli_xcx, your Brazilian fans have been showing toxic behavior by screaming ‘Taylor is dead!’ in your concerts and events related to you. Could you do something about it? We don’t believe that’s what music should be about.”
The misguided hostility stems from a misinterpretation of Charli’s song “Sympathy Is a Knife,” which some fans wrongly believed was about her insecurity around Swift. Charli previously opened for Swift during her Reputation stadium tour alongside Camila Cabello.
After the São Paulo show, Charli expressed her gratitude to fans in Brazil and Mexico, saying, “to all the angels I met in CDMX & São Paulo, thank you for being so kind and sweet!!! Your energy at these shows was truly unmatched.”
Charli’s defense of Swift comes on the heels of her latest release, a remix with Lorde titled “girl, so confusing version,” which clarifies their complicated friendship. The remix, part of Charli’s new album Brat, addresses misunderstandings between the two pop stars.
Lorde celebrated Charli’s Brat on Instagram, saying, “Charli just cooked this one different. So much grit, grace, and skin in the game. There is NO ONE like this bitch.”
Charli XCX’s stance against fan toxicity and her call for positivity reflects her commitment to fostering a supportive and respectful music community. As she continues her tour, she remains a vocal advocate for mutual respect among fans and artists alike.
