Singer-songwriter Chappell Roan, known for her hit singles like “Good Luck, Babe!” and “Red Wine Supernova”, is making waves in the music industry—not just for her six Grammy nominations, but for her fearless stance on speaking her truth. In a recent interview with the BBC, the 26-year-old opened up about the challenges of navigating fame, her refusal to conform to pop star stereotypes, and her determination to prioritize her well-being.
Speaking Out, Not Holding Back
Roan has faced backlash for her outspoken nature, earning labels like “spoiled diva” and accusations of throwing “tantrums.” She rejects these criticisms, explaining that her candid reactions stem from a lifetime of standing up against disrespect.
In one viral moment from last September, Roan famously clapped back at a photographer who insulted stars at the MTV Video Music Awards. Reflecting on the incident, she told the BBC, “I’ve been responding that way to disrespect my whole life — but now there are cameras on me, and I also happen to be a pop star, and those things don’t match. It’s like oil and water.”
Roan also revealed more personal challenges, including harassment and instances of people stalking her parents’ home. She criticized the expectation for artists to remain silent in the face of such behavior.
A “Double-Edged Sword” of Success
With six Grammy nominations under her belt—including Best New Artist, Album of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance—Roan is enjoying her moment in the spotlight. However, she views awards like these with skepticism.
Calling the Grammys a “talent show for the popular kids,” she expressed mixed feelings: “It’s amazing that my music is being recognized, but the award is a double-edged sword.”
When asked how she would react to a win, Roan teased, “I don’t have a speech yet, but you know me. I’m going to say something controversial. Why not?”
Putting Health First
Despite her success, Roan is unapologetic about putting her health and values ahead of her career. Having wrapped her 2024 tour in October to focus on self-care, she revealed that her late grandfather’s philosophy—“There are always options”—guides her decisions.
She recounted advice she often hears: “Do this concert because you’ll never get offered that much money ever again.” Her response? “Who cares? If I don’t feel like doing this right now, there are always options. There is not a scarcity of opportunity.”
Unfiltered and Unstoppable
Though she believes her outspoken nature has hindered her career growth, Roan has no regrets. “I think I’d be more successful if I was okay wearing a muzzle,” she joked. But for Roan, authenticity is non-negotiable: “If I were to override my basic instincts, I would be way bigger… and I would still be on tour right now.”
In a world that often demands silence in exchange for success, Chappell Roan stands as a bold exception. Whether she takes home a Grammy or not, one thing is clear: she’s playing by her own rules, and the world is paying attention.
