Country music superstar Carrie Underwood is set to perform “America the Beautiful” at President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20, 2025. The ceremony, which will take place at the U.S. Capitol, will mark Trump’s swearing-in as the 47th president of the United States.
Underwood’s Statement on the Performance
In a statement to CNN, Underwood expressed her gratitude for being part of the event:
“I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.”
Underwood, who has kept her political views private throughout her career, did not mention Trump by name in her statement, choosing instead to focus on the broader message of unity.
A Notable “Get” for Trump
Underwood’s participation is a significant addition to Trump’s inauguration, considering his history of limited support from high-profile celebrities. During his first term and throughout recent election cycles, Trump’s celebrity endorsements included Kid Rock and retired WWE wrestler Hulk Hogan—popular names but far from the mainstream megastars often associated with presidential events.
In contrast, Underwood is at the peak of her career. The Grammy-winning artist boasts numerous platinum hits and has become a household name through her roles as the face of Sunday Night Football and, starting in March, as a judge on ABC’s American Idol, the show that launched her career in 2005.
Potential Backlash and Industry Dynamics
While many NFL fans and country music listeners may applaud Underwood’s performance, the decision to participate in Trump’s inauguration could polarize her fanbase. Celebrities aligning themselves with Trump often risk alienating left-leaning fans and Hollywood allies.
Country music has traditionally leaned conservative, but recent years have seen some stars, such as Mickey Guyton and Maren Morris, take more progressive stances. This evolution highlights the nuanced and shifting political landscape within the genre.
Inauguration Details
The presidential oath of office will be administered by Chief Justice John Roberts.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh is expected to swear in Vice President-elect JD Vance.
Trump’s inauguration marks a rare instance of a non-incumbent Republican president reclaiming the White House after a four-year gap.
Underwood’s performance, focusing on themes of unity and patriotism, will serve as a centerpiece of the inauguration, making a cultural and political statement as the nation looks ahead to the next four years.
