According to tasteofcountry.com, Carrie Underwood took to the stage to perform tributes to Vince Gill during a CMT Giants episode that was devoted to the Country Music Hall of Famer. Underwood performed a rendition of “GO Rest High on That Mountain” that made Vince Gill visibly emotional. Underwood’s performance received a standing ovation from the crowd that was led by Gill himself.
Gill started writing the song after Keith Whitley passed away from alcohol poisoning back in 1989. A few years late Gill’s older brother, Bob, died suffering a heart attack and Gill revived the song, writing the chorus as well as a second verse. The song ultimately reached number 14 and went on to win CMA and Grammy Awards, becoming one of Gill’s most iconic songs.
Vince Gill taped at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Belmont University in Nashville on September 12th. The show ended up airing on CMT on Friday, September 16th and saw Brad Paisley, Cody Johnson, Sting, Chris Stapleton and more are among the other artists who turned up to honor Gill.
