Carrie Underwood Kicks Off NBC’s ‘Toby Keith: American Icon’ Tribute Concert

Carrie Underwood is ready to light up the stage in honor of the late Toby Keith. The country superstar will open NBC’s concert special, Toby Keith: American Icon, paying tribute to the legendary singer who passed away earlier this year.

Taking the stage at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena, Underwood, 41, will energize the crowd with her lively rendition of Keith’s 1993 hit from his self-titled debut album. “Nashville! We are all here for one reason — this incredible man,” Underwood declares, as a large image of Keith lights up the stage behind her.

Following Keith’s death from stomach cancer in February at the age of 62, Underwood shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram, posting several photos of their time together. “Saddle up the horses, Jesus, ‘cause a true blue COWBOY just made his ride up to heaven!!!” she wrote. “We’re gonna miss you, Toby, but my heart has no doubt that you are standing in the presence of our King right now!!! See you again someday, friend.”

Underwood is just one of the many stars paying homage to Keith’s enduring legacy. The lineup includes Eric Church performing “As Good as I Once Was,” Brantley Gilbert and HARDY taking on “How Do You Like Me Now?!,” and Luke Bryan donning a cowboy hat for “Should’ve Been a Cowboy.” Lainey Wilson, Jamey Johnson, Darius Rucker, and more will also take the stage, with a special performance by Keith’s daughter, Krystal Keith.

Toby Keith: American Icon will air on NBC on Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 9-11 p.m. ET/PT, and will be available for streaming the next day on Peacock.
