The offseason’s latest trade doesn’t involve the active Mariners nor any of the five teams in the hyper-aggressive National League East. Instead, both the Cardinals and Diamondbacks have announced that first baseman Paul Goldschmidt was traded from Arizona to St. Louis in exchange for right-hander Luke Weaver, catcher Carson Kelly, minor league infielder Andy Young and a Competitive Balance Round B selection in next year’s draft.
Goldschmidt, 31, is heading into his final season of club control and stands to earn $14.5MM next season before reaching free agency next winter. The six-time All-Star rebounded from an awful start to the 2018 campaign to finish with a brilliant .290/.389/.533 line through 690 plate appearances,
