On Tuesday, March 19th, Camila Cabello performed a major act of kindness, donating $10,000 to a GoFundMe campaign for 8-year-old homeless refugee Tanitoluwa Adewumi and his family.
Tani is a young boy who fled northern Nigeria in 2017 along with his family to escape the violent terrorism inflicted by Boko Haram on Christians in the region. The young boy and his family currently live in a Manhattan homeless shelter.
Despite the obstacles this kid and his family have been dealt, Tani has thrived in America, and has recently been crowned the New York state chess champion in his category. Incredibly, he picked up the game only a year ago after a part-time teacher waived his fee to join the local elementary school’s chess club.
Partly thanks to Cabello’s contribution, Tani’s story has gained significant media attention in the last week after and was profiled in The New York Times. The GoFundMe campaign for the family has more than tripled its original goal of $50,000.
