Beyoncé is set to captivate audiences again with her new documentary “Call Me Country: Beyoncé & Nashville’s Renaissance,” premiering on Max on April 26. This production by CNN FlashDocs delves into the significant influence of high-profile artists like Beyoncé and Lil Nas X on the country music landscape, particularly focusing on the role of Black musicians in shaping its modern era.
The documentary arrives in the wake of Beyoncé’s historical achievement with “Texas Hold ‘Em,” the chart-topping lead single from her latest album “Cowboy Carter.” Released during the 2024 Super Bowl, the song not only debuted at No. 1 on Hot Country Songs but also became the first country track by a Black woman to dominate the Billboard Hot 100. Its success spurred increased streaming and recognition for other Black female artists in the genre.
“Call Me Country” will feature insights from Grammy-winning country duo Brothers Osborne and banjo virtuoso Rhiannon Giddens, among others. It also includes commentary from cultural critics like Touré and leaders of the Black Opry, Holly G. and Tanner D, providing a rounded perspective on this pivotal moment in country music history.
As part of Beyoncé’s ongoing exploration of Black cultural contributions to music, “Cowboy Carter” blends traditional elements with her unique vision, further cementing her role in evolving the country genre. The documentary promises to be a crucial viewing for understanding the ongoing narrative of diversity and innovation in American music.
