Billie Eilish on Protecting Young Artists Like Olivia Rodrigo in the Music Industry

At just 21, Billie Eilish has already taken on a protective role for emerging young artists in the music industry. In a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times, Eilish expressed her concern for Olivia Rodrigo, who catapulted to fame after Eilish’s own rapid rise. This sense of guardianship inspired Eilish’s song “Goldwing” from her 2021 album, ‘Happier Than Ever.’

Eilish related to Rodrigo’s sudden fame, recalling her as “this little dainty child” and expressing anxiety about the challenges she might face, particularly given Rodrigo’s background in acting. “Goldwing” reflects these sentiments, with lyrics cautioning about the exploitation of young talent.

Eilish’s empathy extends beyond Rodrigo, as she sees herself in other young stars like 16-year-old Ariana Greenblatt. Her experience growing up in the spotlight has made her acutely aware of the pressures faced by young artists.

Recently nominated for five Grammys for her song “What Was I Made For?” from the Barbie movie soundtrack, Eilish continues to navigate her own journey with fame, balancing her personal growth with her commitment to supporting the next generation of artists.
