Billie Eilish Eyes Movie Acting Debut in The Bell Jar Adaptation

Billie Eilish is preparing to step into a new spotlight, one that shines from a movie screen rather than a concert stage.

The Grammy and Academy Award winning artist is reportedly in talks to star in a film adaptation of The Bell Jar, the influential 1963 novel written by poet Sylvia Plath. If finalized, the project would mark Eilish’s first leading role in a feature film.

The film will be directed and written by Sarah Polley, the filmmaker who earned widespread acclaim and an Academy Award for her screenplay adaptation of Women Talking. Polley’s involvement has already drawn attention from film industry watchers, and the addition of Eilish as the potential lead brings even greater visibility to the project.

Eilish is expected to portray Esther Greenwood, the young writer at the center of Plath’s semi autobiographical story. Set largely in the 1950s, the narrative follows Esther as she lands a prestigious magazine opportunity in New York City. Despite the apparent success surrounding her, she becomes increasingly overwhelmed by the pressures of society, career expectations, and her own mental health struggles.

The Bell Jar is widely regarded as one of the most candid literary explorations of depression and identity written in the twentieth century. While the novel has remained influential for decades, translating its deeply personal perspective to the screen has proven challenging. Over the years, several attempted adaptations have been announced with high profile actors and directors attached, but none ultimately reached production.

This new effort could finally change that trajectory. The film is being developed with Focus Features, alongside producers including Plan B and StudioCanal, giving the project strong industry backing.

For Eilish, the role would represent another expansion of an already multifaceted career. The singer has previously dipped into acting with a memorable appearance in the 2023 series Swarm, where she portrayed a mysterious cult figure. Still, a leading dramatic role in a major feature would mark a significant step into a different creative arena.

Hollywood is hardly unfamiliar territory for the artist. Eilish has already made a major impact in film through her songwriting. Her James Bond theme No Time to Die earned her an Academy Award for Best Original Song, and she repeated the achievement with What Was I Made For? from the blockbuster Barbie soundtrack.

If the casting deal is finalized, The Bell Jar could become a notable moment where pop music and cinema intersect once again, placing one of the world’s most recognizable voices at the center of a deeply introspective literary adaptation.
