A new documentary, Beatles 64, is set to hit Disney+ on November 29, bringing to life the story of The Beatles’ groundbreaking arrival in the United States. Produced by Martin Scorsese and directed by David Tedeschi, the film commemorates the 60th anniversary of a cultural phenomenon that forever changed music and pop culture.
From Kennedy Airport to The Ed Sullivan Show
The Beatles landed at New York’s Kennedy Airport on February 7, 1964, greeted by throngs of screaming fans and media frenzy. The documentary captures the sheer hysteria of their arrival, dubbed “Beatlemania,” and the unforgettable debut performance on The Ed Sullivan Show that followed. Viewed by over 73 million people, the event became the most-watched television broadcast of its time and cemented the band’s place in history.
“Their thrilling debut performance captivated the nation,” reads a statement from the filmmakers, “but Beatles 64 also reflects a more intimate, behind-the-scenes story, showcasing the camaraderie and humor of John, Paul, George, and Ringo during an unimaginable rise to fame.”
Restored Footage and Modern Enhancements
Beatles 64 features original footage by renowned documentarians Albert and David Maysles, known for their work on Gimme Shelter. These clips, first seen in What’s Happening! The Beatles In The U.S.A. and later re-released as The Beatles: The First U.S. Visit, have been restored and upscaled to 4K by Park Road Post in New Zealand.
Audio restoration was led by Peter Jackson’s Wingnut Films, utilizing the same innovative “de-mixing” technology used for last year’s final Beatles single, “Now and Then,” and the remixed stereo version of the Revolver album. Giles Martin, son of legendary Beatles producer George Martin, supervised the film’s audio remastering.
Exclusive Interviews and Personal Stories
The documentary goes beyond archival footage to include new interviews with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and fans whose lives were profoundly impacted by The Beatles’ first U.S. visit. The personal anecdotes and reflections add depth to the story of the Fab Four’s meteoric rise.
Companion Album Release
Coinciding with the documentary, The Beatles: 1964 US Albums In Mono collection will be released on November 22. This seven-album set includes iconic records like Meet The Beatles! and Beatles ’65, pressed on 180g vinyl from the original mono master tapes. Featuring liner notes by Beatles historian Bruce Spizer, the collection pays homage to the early albums that helped launch Beatlemania.
A Legacy Revisited
With its combination of cutting-edge restoration, exclusive interviews, and a heartfelt tribute to The Beatles’ legacy, Beatles 64 promises to transport viewers back to the dawn of a cultural revolution. As the world gears up to celebrate this milestone, the Fab Four’s magic continues to resonate, reminding us of their unparalleled influence on music and beyond.
