Avatar: The Way of Water, was able to earn $45 million in its fourth weekend, making a leap to the $500 million mark at the domestic box office. While overseas, the Avatar sequel garnered $132.6 million over the weekend for an international total of $1.19 billion and global total of $1.7 billion.
Meanwhile, in the number two spot was M3GAN which had a $30.2 million opening in North America. It had the best start for a horror film opening in January since Devil Inside in 2012. While overseas, the film had a $14.8 million launch making the global tally, $45 million. M3GAN tells the story of a robotic doll who becomes obsessed with a young girl.
From the two films alone, the box office revenue was up almost 70 percent from the same weekend in 2022.
