This week, pop star Ariana Grande and actress-singer Cynthia Erivo have been cast in the new film production of the musical Wicked. Led by In the Heights director Jon M. Chu, the project will feature Erivo as Elphaba and Grande as Glinda.
Back in 2011, Grande tweeted about how watching Wicked inspired her to embody the very role she now holds. “[Seeing Wicked] made me realize again how badly I want 2 play Glinda at some point in my life!” she wrote ten years ago.
Erivo, an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony-winner, will undoubtedly blow audiences out of the water as she has already taken the screen by storm as Arethra Franklin in Genius: Aretha earlier this year, as well as released an impressive debut album Ch. 1 Vs. 1 back in September.
While not many details about the Wicked film have been further revealed, the excitement is definitely palpable.
