If anyone was hoping that the Vision Pro would get a late stay of execution with the changing of the CEO guard, their hopes have been crushed. Apple analyst and insider Ming-Chi Kuo reports that even the company’s next CEO, John Ternus, isn’t interested in updating the product or releasing a lighter version.
As PCMag reports, according to Kuo, Ternus has halted work on both the Vision Pro 2 and the long-rumored Vision Air. He has also approved a major overhaul of Apple’s headset and smart glasses roadmap, which will now focus on just two smart glasses.
Kuo does not specify the reason for the shift, but the original Vision Pro in 2024 and its M5 update in 2025 got a rather lukewarm response. Around the same time, Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses also gained in popularity. Apple is now focused on its rival to Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses in 2027, and a “display-equipped AR/XR smart glasses device powered by optical waveguides” in 2029, Kuo says.
Some of the analyst’s claims align with previous reports from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and MacRumors. In October 2025, Gurman reported that the company was prioritizing smart glasses over Vision Air. Last week, he also mentioned that the smart glasses would be unveiled in 2027. Before that, MacRumors claimed that Apple had already stopped work on the Vision Pro and reassigned staff to other teams.
For now, Apple’s primary focus is its annual developer conference, which kicks off today, June 8 at 10 a.m. PT. Stay tuned for all the news.
