It’s been a quite an interesting year for Apple, alongside its usual iPhone launch, it also announced it was scrapping the much-talked-about Apple Car project and was then rumored to be turning its attention to robotics.
as SupercarBlondie reports, there’s since been plenty of speculation that Apple could be leaning more heavily into smart home tech that’s centered around its proprietary Apple Intelligence. Now it appears that push for smart home devices might include a smart doorbell.
According to Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Apple is working on a doorbell with facial recognition technology that would wirelessly connect to a deadbolt lock and unlock the door for its residents, like Face ID for iPhone.
Reports of a smart doorbell comes after Apple’s rumored plans to launch a smart home hub and security camera to compete with Amazon Ring and Google Nest. The smart doorbell will be wirelessly connected to a deadbolt, so that when you approach the door, the camera can scan your face and unlock the door automatically.
Gurman says the smart doorbell will most likely work with the existing third-party locks that are already compatible with Apple’s HomeKit protocol. However, he goes on to say that the tech giant could potentially team up with a “specific lock maker to offer a complete system on day one.”
Its also suggested that the doorbells will make use of Apple’s upcoming Proxima wireless chip and its security features which help to keep customers’ data safe – exactly what you’d expect from a home security system.
The report claims that the doorbell camera will be launched alongside an ‘AI-infused smart home hub’ that has a six-inch display and a new operating system that has been specially designed an built to control the home, play videos, and run FaceTime.
So it looks like 2025 is gearing up to another busy year for the tech giant.
