Apple Becomes First Streaming Platform to Win Best Picture Oscar for “CODA”

The 2022 Oscars had a handful of historical moments, including AppleTV becoming the first streaming platform to take home the biggest prize of the evening: Best Picture.

CODA, Apple Original Films’ groundbreaking film with a predominantly Deaf cast, won three awards at this year’s Academy Awards, including Troy Kotsur’s supporting actor trophy and director Siân Heder’s win for best adapted screenplay in addition to the film winning best picture. These three Oscars are Apple’s first-ever.

CODA also made history as the first Sundance Film Festival movie to win the best picture Oscar as well as the first film to win the category without having been nominated in the directing and editing categories.

“This is a really big moment for the Deaf community. It’s a really big moment for the disability community,” Heder said. “Marlee Matlin won an Oscar 35 years ago, and not that much has changed in Hollywood, so I want to thank the Academy for making that change. And I want to say to everyone in the Deaf community and everyone in the disability community that there’s a place for you here, your stories are important, and we need to make room. And this is one story, and let this one be the first of many, many films to come out of this beautiful community.”
