Angelina Jolie Says She No Longer Recognizes U.S., Raises Alarm Over Threats to Free Speech

Angelina Jolie stirred conversation this past weekend at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, where she delivered a heartfelt call for free speech and expression in America. During a Q&A for her new film Couture, the Oscar-winning actress, aged 50, said, “I love my country, but at this time, I don’t recognize my country.” She described these as “very, very heavy times,” cautioning that any force which divides people or limits personal freedoms is deeply concerning.

Jolie’s remarks come amid growing controversy following ABC’s decision to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! after comments made by Jimmy Kimmel about the assassination of Charlie Kirk. She didn’t name specific cases but appeared to reflect on recent high-profile disputes over political speech and censorship.

The actress also shared her broader worldview: having an international family and life, she said she’s long been rooted in an equal, united perspective that transcends physical borders. Jolie stressed the importance of being mindful of how speech is curtailed—not out of fear, but out of concern. “Anything, anywhere that divides or limits personal expressions and freedoms from anyone, I think, is very dangerous.”
