The New Orleans Saints have secured their star running back Alvin Kamara for two more years, ensuring his presence on the team through the 2026 season. On Tuesday night, the Saints announced the extension, which is reportedly worth approximately $24.5 million, with $22 million guaranteed, according to sources close to ESPN.
Kamara appeared to confirm the news himself earlier in the evening by reposting a response to the report on his social media account, signaling his satisfaction with the deal. This extension comes after Kamara entered the 2023 season with no guaranteed money left on his previous contract, a five-year, $75 million deal signed in 2020 that was due to run through 2025.
Despite facing the season without a new contract, Kamara had expressed his willingness to play without any distractions. “I’m not worried about it. I’m here to play. I’m going to perform,” Kamara said in September, emphasizing his commitment to the team and the city of New Orleans. “I love this city, right? I love the fans. I love these people. They support me. They’ve been supporting me for years now.”
Kamara had been due to make $22.4 million in base salary under his old contract and had a salary cap figure of $29 million. Given the Saints’ tight salary-cap situation, it was likely that an adjustment would have been necessary. This new deal not only locks Kamara in for two more seasons but also frees up around $18 million against the Saints’ 2025 cap, according to NFL Network.
The extension also marks the resolution of one of the last major contract matters for the Saints this year. Kamara’s contract status had been a point of attention in the offseason, with the running back notably missing the final practice of mandatory minicamp due to the issue, though he participated fully in training camp thereafter.
Kamara’s production on the field this season has remained steady. Through the first several games, he has totaled 111 carries for 438 yards and six touchdowns, along with 34 receptions for 252 yards and one additional score. His versatility as both a rusher and receiver has been a hallmark of his game since he entered the league.
Selected in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft, Kamara quickly made an impact, winning Offensive Rookie of the Year that same season. He has since been named to five Pro Bowls and is widely regarded as one of the most dynamic and versatile running backs in the NFL.
Rumors had swirled earlier in the season regarding a possible trade involving Kamara, but the running back dismissed those reports and expressed a desire to finish his career in New Orleans. “I’m going to be here,” Kamara stated firmly on social media, emphasizing his loyalty to the team.
Kamara’s extension is a significant move for the Saints, a team that has relied on his consistent performance and leadership on the field. With his future now secured, both Kamara and the Saints can look ahead to focusing on the rest of the season and their long-term goals.
