Alicia Keys, Ricky Martin, More Added to the National Recording Registry

The Library of Congress is preserving a number of iconic musicians’ works in the National Recording Registry for the purpose of posterity.

This year’s inductees include albums ranging from Ellington’s 1956 Ellington at Newport to 1997’s Buena Vista Social Club to Alicia Keys’ Songs in A Minor.

In addition to a myriad of influential music, the Library of Congress has also added some major historic recordings to the registry. Included in the list are the 9/11 broadcasts of WNYC’s chilling coverage from the day the World Trade Center was destroyed and other “sounds of history.”

The complete presidential speeches of President Franklin D. Roosevelt are also on the list, as well as WSB-Atlanta’s coverage of Hank Aaron’s 715th home run.

“The National Recording Registry reflects the diverse music and voices that have shaped our nation’s history and culture through recorded sound,” said Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden.
