ABC has suspended Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely in response to recent comments made by Jimmy Kimmel about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The decision came after Kimmel suggested that “many in MAGA land” were trying to capitalize on Kirk’s death, a claim that drew sharp criticism from media outlets, political figures, and major ABC affiliates.
Nexstar Media Group, which operates dozens of ABC-affiliated stations, announced it will pull the show from its schedule in its markets. The move was described as necessary because of Kimmel’s on-air remarks, which Nexstar called insensitive and harmful to public discourse.
Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr also stepped in, saying the network’s decision was not just a matter of internal policy but one with regulatory implications. He warned ABC and its parent company, Disney, that broadcast licenses could be jeopardized for airing content deemed to mislead or be politically distorted.
As of now, there has been no public comment from Jimmy Kimmel addressing the suspension. The network’s statement offered little detail, simply noting the show’s status as “preempted indefinitely.” Viewers and affiliates alike are watching closely, as this incident raises questions about where lines are drawn in political speech, satire, and broadcast regulation.
