A24’s Death of a Unicorn Teases a Zany Horror-Comedy Adventure

A24 has unveiled the first trailer for its latest horror-comedy Death of a Unicorn, starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega. The film, directed and written by Alex Scharfman in his feature debut, is set to hit theaters this spring, promising a wild mix of absurdity, scares, and heartfelt moments.

A Tale of Unicorns and Chaos
The story follows a father-daughter duo, played by Rudd and Ortega, who accidentally hit and kill a unicorn during a road trip to a weekend retreat. What begins as an unfortunate mishap spirals into a fantastical nightmare when they arrive at the retreat hosted by Rudd’s billionaire boss, portrayed by Richard E. Grant. The boss has sinister plans to exploit the unicorn’s curative properties—but there’s a catch. The mythical creature had loved ones, and they’re now out for vengeance.

An All-Star Ensemble
In addition to Rudd, Ortega, and Grant, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, Anthony Carrigan, Sunita Mani, and Jessica Hynes.

Behind the Scenes
Death of a Unicorn is co-financed by A24 and Ley Line Entertainment. The film’s producers include Alex Scharfman, Drew Houpt, Lucas Joaquin (Secret Engine), Tyler Campellone, Lars Knudsen (Square Peg), Tim Headington, and Theresa Steele Page. Executive producers include Ari Aster (Hereditary), Michael Williams, Jacob Epstein, and both Rudd and Ortega.

Adding to the film’s intrigue is the score by John Carpenter (Halloween), his son Cody Carpenter, and Daniel Davies. Their contribution is expected to bring a dark yet playful tone to the film.

A24’s Busy Year
The studio continues its streak of buzzworthy releases. Following the December 6 debut of Kyle Mooney’s Y2K and awards hopefuls like The Brutalist and Babygirl, A24’s 2025 slate is packed with promising titles. Projects like Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland’s Warfare, David Lowery’s Mother Mary, and Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine starring Dwayne Johnson remain undated, alongside Death of a Unicorn.

With its unique premise and powerhouse team, Death of a Unicorn seems poised to deliver a cinematic experience that’s equal parts hilarious, horrifying, and heartfelt.
