On Friday, January 8th, Kelly Clarkson finished off the first week of The Kelly Clarkson Show with a tender cover of Kacey Musgraves’ hit single “Rainbow.” Released as the fifth and final single from her 2018 studio album Golden Hour, Musgraves performed the track live at the 2019 Grammy Awards, where she also took home the trophies for album of the year, best country album, best country song and best country solo performance.
“Well the sky has finally opened/ The rain and wind stopped blowin’/ But you’re stuck out in the same old storm again/ You hold tight to your umbrella/ Darlin’, I’m just tryin’ to tell ya/ That there’s always been a rainbow hangin’ over your head,” she belted out on the chorus, before transitioning into the track’s bridge. Wearing a sheer black and floral-print dress and studded belt, a seated Clarkson was joined by only her pianist for an acoustic take on the hopeful country ballad.
Other Kellyoke covers by the original American Idol winner throughout the week ranged from recent hits like Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home” and Selena Gomez’s “Rare” to classics like Madonna’s 1983 hit “Borderline,” and Chicago’s 1982 single “Hard to Say I’m Sorry.”
