This Day in Music History – December 11th

1957 – Jerry Lee Lewis secretly married his 13-year-old third cousin Myra Gale Brown. The marriage caused Lewis to be blacklisted from many radio stations and he was dropped from Dick Clark’s shows.

1958 – The Coasters recorded “Charlie Brown.”

1960 – Aretha Franklin made her New York debut at the Village Vanguard.

1964 – Sam Cooke was shot to death at a the Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles, CA.

1965 – Velvet Underground made its performance debut at a high school dance in Summit, NJ.

1967 – The NBC-TV special “Movin’ with Nancy Sinatra” aired.

1970 – Ringo Starr’s movie “The Magic Christian” premiered in London.

1970 – The albums “John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band” and “Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band” were released.

1971 – James Brown 32nd album, “Revolution of the Mind,” was released.

1972 – James Brown was arrested after a show in Knoxville, TN, and charged with “disorderly conduct” after being accused of trying to incite a riot. The charges were dropped when Brown threatens to sue for $1 million.

1972 – Genesis played their first show in the U.S. at Brandeis University in Waltham, MA.

1976 – Bob Seger released his album “Night Moves”.

1976 – KISS guitarist Ace Frehley was nearly electrocuted during a concert in Florida. He had touched a short-circuited light. He was carried from the stage but returned 10 minutes later to continue and finish the show.
