It’s National Deviled Egg Day! No, the calendar hasn’t fast-forwarded to spring. Today, November 2, is indeed National Deviled Egg Day, and while deviled eggs often take on a shining role come Easter, they’re also a go-to appetizer for that other holiday just around the corner: Thanksgiving.
Did you know that another name for deviled eggs is “Eggs Mimosa?” Doesn’t sound super appetizing, does it? Conjures up images of a hard boiled egg dropped into your brunch cocktail. Which is probably why the vast majority of people refer to them as “Deviled Eggs.”
While deviled eggs originated in ancient Rome, the term “deviled” didn’t appear until the 18th century when it was used to describe highly seasoned, fried, or boiled dishes. By the 19th century, the word “deviled” was used to describe hot seasonings in general. Today, not all deviled egg recipes are spicy, but a little cayenne pepper or hot mustard can always give them an extra kick.
This dish is a traditional favorite in both American and French cultures. Deviled eggs are made with hard-boiled eggs, mayonnaise, mustard, and seasoning, and can be served as a side dish, appetizer, or main course.
Since they’re hearty and comforting, deviled eggs will surely please your hangry turkey day guests when they arrive, but they’re not so large that partygoers will fill up before the feast. No matter if you opt for the tried-and-true classic recipe or decide to dress up the traditional deviled egg, you’ll be able to do much of the prep for this starter ahead of time, which means you’ll have one less thing to focus on as mealtime inches closer.
