We ALL Scream for Ice Cream Days in August!

No, August isn’t National Ice Cream Month – that honor went to July – but it might as well be, seeing as how there are SEVEN frozen treat-related foodie holidays to celebrate this month (8, if you count National Frozen Custard day on August 8th).  This week, we are coming up on both National Ice cream Pie Day on August 18th, and national Soft-Serve Ice Cream Day (also known as Soft Ice Cream Day – which just sounds weird, but okay), on the 19th.

National Soft Ice Cream Day, also known as “soft serve,” is a swirled delight is served using a special machine. Ice cream vendors also use a special technique to double the amount of air in soft ice cream, which creates its light, smooth texture.  Soft ice cream has been around for about a century. Although its exact origins are unknown, we do know that the first references to soft ice cream appeared in the early 1900s. At that time, only a few types existed. Now, most ice cream shops serve a variety of fun flavors.

National Ice Cream Pie Day, on the other hand, honors the pie that contains ice cream and therefore has to be stored in the freezer before serving. The event is most popular in the USA and you would find pies in the freezers of mostly any supermarket, often dealing with a special party topic. Celebrating this holiday means simply that you should make or buy a frozen pie of choice and enjoy!

Here are some ideas to whet your appetite:

Mississippi mud pie

It is a chocolate-based dessert pie that is likely to have originated in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The treat contains a gooey chocolate sauce on top of a crumbly chocolate crust. The pie is usually served with ice cream.
