On Wednesday, July 24th, Big Sean released his new single “Overtime”. This track is just the beginning of the rollout toward his fifth studio album. The song premiered as Zane Lowe’s World Record over at Beats 1.
Big Sean’s latest release goes into lyrical overdrive, and paints a picture: “In this hot girl summer, I’m just trying to find a wife/ Visualizing from every island that’s on Hawaii/ With my team on each side, like ha-ha-ha-ha-ha/ With the last laugh like Kawhi,”. The record closes out with a sample of bowling legend Pete Webber’s epic celebration once he claimed victory.
In a recent interview, Big Sean spoke about taking some time away from music to address his mental health. With that all squared away, Sean felt that “Overtime” was a return to what made him fall in love with rapping in the first place.
“In a sense I just been returning to my roots, bro,” the 31-year-old told Zane Lowe. “I’ve just been getting back to having fun with it. At one point, I felt like it might have started to become like a burden, or like work, but now it’s just fun. It was a time well spent. I never really knew how important it was to take some time for myself and get myself right.”
This is just the beginning for Big Sean. But for now, listen to “Overtime” here.
