At the upcoming 2019 CFDA Fashion Awards, Jennifer Lopez will be honored with the Fashion Icon Award. With her prestige as a pop star, actress, and producer, Lopez has made a lasting, global impact on fashion. Lopez has been an influential figure in the Latin American community and beyond, inspiring people through her performance and style for decades. She not only incites buzz-worthy red carpet moments time after time, but also shares her sartorial acumen through her fashion, beauty, and fragrance lines. Lopez will receive the accolade at the CFDA Fashion Awards on June 3, hosted at the Brooklyn Museum.
Previous recipients of the Fashion Icon Award include Naomi Campbell, Beyoncé, Franca Sozzani, Pharrell Williams and Rihanna. Lopez will be the last Fashion Icon honoree under Diane von Furstenburg’s tenure as CFDA chairwoman. “Jennifer Lopez uses clothes as a way to express confidence and power,” von Furstenberg says. “Both designers and fans look forward to her fashion statements.”
Von Furstenburg’s statement rings true to Lopez’s legacy, especially considering her red carpet fashion. It was her jaw-dropping green Versace dress with the plunging “V” front at the Grammy Awards in 2000 that began the conversation about Lopez’ status as a style icon, and people haven’t been able to stop talking about her since. From that dress to the hot pink tulle Giambattista Valli couture gown she wore to the premiere of her movie Second Act last December, Lopez has two decades of iconic fashion under her belt, and many more to come.
“Jennifer Lopez’s style is bold, uninhibited, and always memorable,” Steven Kolb, President and CEO of the CFDA, says. “Designers, including many of our CFDA Members, love to dress her for both stage and private moments.” Among those names are Tom Ford (who will succeed Von Furstenburg as chairman of the CFDA), Valentino, and of course, Versace.
