On Wednesday, March 20th, Mumford & Sons released a touching new music video for their latest song “Beloved”. The track and video are about letting a loved one know they just how loved they are before they leave. The ballad is solemn and emotional fourth track from the band’s latest album, Delta.
“Everyone knows loss in one way or another,” frontman Marcus Mumford said in a press release for the new video. “This song is about that. I’d never sat with anyone as they died before, and it had an effect on me. As it does everyone I know who has experienced it. But there’s wildness and beauty in it as well, and a deep honouring, that became the beginnings of this song that we worked up called ‘Beloved.’ I feel determined for people to take whatever they want from it, and not to be emotionally prescriptive.”
The beautiful location reflects the song’s overarching messages of death, acceptance, memories and heartache. The video was shot in and around Port Talbot in Wales, which director Charlotte Regan, a BAFTA-nominated filmmaker, chose because of its dual grit and community aspect.
“As soon as we started looking at pictures of Port Talbot, we knew it was perfect,” Regan said. “It was a proper beautiful place with an amazing sense of community but still maintained that kind of grit we were looking for.”
Throughout the heartfelt clip, we watch the story unfold around a young boy who joins a woman who breaks free from a hospital to enjoy spending time in the city running around and laughing. But the video’s ending is emotional, as the song addresses the battle of letting a beloved one go.
