The term ‘Supergroup’ is used when members of popular bands get together for a project, tour, or LP to either bid their time between gigs or when they find themselves between bands. Here are our favorite ‘Supergroups.’
Asia
Carl Palmer of ‘Emerson Lake and Palmer,’ the late John Wetton of ‘King Crimson,’ Steve Howe and Geoff Downes of ‘Yes’ were the key players of Asia. Asia hit the charts with “The Heat of the Moment,” “Only Time Will Tell” and “Soul Survivor.” The band sold millions of albums over their short career, as Asia.
Bad English
Neil Shon of Journey, John Waite and Jonathan Cain from the Babys, and Ricky Phillips from Styx were able to set aside their egos to have hits like “When I See You Smile” and “Price of Love.”
Derek and the Dominos
The song “Lala” is a great example of the power of the Super Group. This one consisted of Duane Allman and Eric Clapton.
Various Artists </strong
Cream (members of the Yardbirds, Manfred Man and John Mayall) Blind Faith (Spencer Davis, Yardbirds, Cream), and the Power Station (Robert Palmer, two members from Duran Duran, and 1 from Chic) can be considered Supergroups. To a certain extent, the group Journey can be considered in this conversation, given that the band consisted of members from Santana, Steve Miller, the Baby’s and The Tubes.
The Traveling Wilburys
This band had all the stars, covering 50 years of music – Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan were the ‘boys in the band’ – breaking sales records and stereotypes, selling nearly 30 million albums while the band stayed together. The Traveling Wilburys enjoyed moderate chart success with “Handle with Care,” “End of the Line,” “Nobody’s Child,” and “She’s My Baby.” Sadly, Tom, George, and Roy have started their own ‘Supergroup’ in heaven…
Damn Yankees
Tommy Shaw from Styx, Ted Nugent, Jack Blades from Night Ranger and Michael Cartellone from Lynyrd Skynyrd rocked the free world; their most memorable hits proved to be “High Enough” and “Runaway.”
The Traveling Wilburys
Talk about a supergroup, Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty, and Bob Dylan broke ground and sales records for this genre, selling nearly 30 million albums overall. The band enjoyed moderate chart success with “Handle with Care,” “End of the Line,” “Nobody’s Child” and “She’s My Baby.”
