Celebrating the Soul Sound

Soul music can be funk, rock, Hip Hop, Blues and more. There’s the Philly Sound, the Motown Sound, and the great sound from the Stax label. Here’s our soul salute today…

The classic song “Soul Man” was a bit hit for Sam and Dave, used in the Blues Brothers movie and covered by over 25 recording artists. The song was written by a young man who was born in rural Tennessee, raised by his grandmother, working at a meatpacking plant in Memphis during the day, playing his music at night.

Isaac Hayes has been honored by the Grammy Hall of Fame, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2002) and played a very bad man in the movie “Escape From New York”. Isaac Hayes led a full life up to the time of his death in 2008.

Let’s give a quick shout out to soul stars the Chi-Lites, The Emotions, Heatwave, Curtis Mayfield, Teddy Pendergrass, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes and Sister Sledge.
