Paul Anka, David Foster and Barbara Mandrell Named 2026 Kennedy Center Honorees

Three major figures in popular music are among the five artists selected to receive the 2026 Kennedy Center Honors, with Paul Anka, David Foster and Barbara Mandrell joining actor Andy Garcia and playwright David Mamet in this year’s distinguished class.

The annual recognition celebrates individuals whose artistic achievements have made a lasting impact on American culture. This year’s recipients represent decades of success across music, film and theater, with careers that have influenced generations of performers and audiences.

Anka, 85, became an international sensation during the late 1950s, establishing himself as one of pop music’s most recognizable young stars. His early recordings, including “Diana” and “Put Your Head on My Shoulder,” helped define an era of popular music.

His accomplishments eventually extended well beyond his own recordings. Anka wrote the English lyrics to “My Way,” which became closely associated with Frank Sinatra, and composed the familiar theme music for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. His songwriting career has remained an important part of his musical legacy.

Foster, 77, has spent decades shaping the sound of contemporary popular music. The Canadian-born producer and composer has earned 16 Grammy Awards while contributing to recordings by some of the industry’s most successful performers.

His credits include collaborations with Whitney Houston, Céline Dion, Chicago, Barbra Streisand and Michael Jackson. Known for his work on powerful ballads and sophisticated pop productions, Foster has helped create recordings that remain staples of adult contemporary radio.

Country music will also have a prominent place in this year’s celebration through Mandrell, 77, whose career made her one of the genre’s leading entertainers.

A talented multi-instrumentalist, Mandrell achieved widespread success during the 1970s and 1980s with songs such as “Sleeping Single in a Double Bed” and “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool.”

Her popularity extended to television through Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters, which introduced her musical talents to a broader national audience. She also made history as the first performer to win the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award in consecutive years.

The two remaining honorees have established equally notable careers in film and theater.

Garcia, 70, earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance in The Godfather Part III. His extensive film career also includes appearances in The Untouchables and the Ocean’s franchise.

Mamet, 78, is an acclaimed playwright and screenwriter whose work includes Glengarry Glen Ross, American Buffalo and The Untouchables. His achievements include a Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

This year’s celebration will also mark a significant change in the history of the Kennedy Center Honors.

For the first time since the awards began in 1978, the ceremony will take place outside the Kennedy Center’s traditional performance space. The December 7 event is scheduled for Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C., as the Kennedy Center remains closed amid renovation plans.

The institution has also faced controversy surrounding changes to its leadership and President Donald Trump’s involvement in its operations. Trump currently serves as chairman of the Kennedy Center’s board, and the 2026 recipients were selected following recommendations from a special honors advisory committee.

Despite the unusual circumstances surrounding the venue, the ceremony will continue its longstanding tradition of recognizing major artistic contributions.

Television arrangements for the 2026 celebration have not yet been confirmed. CBS carried the annual program from its inaugural year through 2025.

For music audiences, this year’s honorees offer a particularly strong connection to several generations of popular entertainment. From Anka’s enduring standards to Foster’s influential productions and Mandrell’s country classics, the 2026 class represents an impressive collection of musical achievements.
