Knicks Raise Championship Banner at Madison Square Garden After 53-Year Wait

For the first time in more than half a century, Madison Square Garden welcomed a new NBA championship banner to its rafters Tuesday night, marking a historic occasion for the New York Knicks and their long-suffering supporters.

Before beginning their 2026-27 season against the Philadelphia 76ers, the Knicks celebrated their remarkable championship run with a ceremony honoring the players, coaches and organization responsible for ending a 53-year title drought.

The evening brought together generations of Knicks basketball history. Legendary guard Walt “Clyde” Frazier, a member of New York’s championship teams in 1970 and 1973, returned to center court to present the current champions with their rings.

Among those receiving the honors were Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby, three central figures in the team’s successful pursuit of the 2026 NBA championship.

The rings themselves were designed to capture the significance of the achievement. Created by luxury jeweler Jason of Beverly Hills, each features nearly 800 diamonds and sapphires, with intricate details commemorating the team’s postseason journey.

One particularly distinctive feature is a miniature representation of Madison Square Garden concealed beneath a movable section of the ring. The design pays tribute to the arena that has served as the franchise’s home and the setting for countless memorable moments.

The championship celebration followed New York’s triumph over the San Antonio Spurs in five games during the NBA Finals, bringing the franchise its first league title since 1973.

Brunson, who earned Finals MVP honors, addressed the Madison Square Garden crowd during the ceremony. The Knicks captain expressed appreciation for the support the team received throughout its championship run and made clear that the players were eager to pursue another title.

The emotional centerpiece arrived when New York’s championship banner ascended toward the arena ceiling, joining the franchise’s previous championship honors.

For fans who had spent decades waiting for another title, the ceremony represented more than a celebration of one successful season. It marked the conclusion of a championship drought that had stretched across generations of players and supporters.

However, the festive atmosphere did not translate into an opening-night victory.

Philadelphia spoiled the celebration with a 106-100 win, powered by 28 points from Tyrese Maxey. Jaylen Brown contributed 19 points in his 76ers debut, while LeBron James added 14 points as Philadelphia began its season with an impressive road victory.

Brunson led New York with 21 points, while Towns finished with 19 points and 12 rebounds. The Knicks struggled to maintain their early momentum, allowing Philadelphia to take control during the second half.

Although the defending champions began their new campaign with a loss, the result could not diminish the significance of the evening.

New York entered the night with a championship to celebrate and left with a permanent reminder of its accomplishment hanging above the court.

The challenge now is to determine whether this Knicks team can add another banner to the collection.
