Britney Spears is giving fans a fresh reason to revisit her early 2000s pop era with the official release of “She’ll Never Be Me,” a previously unreleased song she co-wrote with former boyfriend Justin Timberlake.
The track arrived on streaming platforms October 9, more than two decades after it was recorded during sessions for Spears’ third studio album, *Britney*, released in 2001.
Spears and Timberlake share songwriting credits with Bradley Daymond and Alex Greggs, the production duo known as Riprock ‘n’ Alex G, who also produced the recording.
Musically, “She’ll Never Be Me” captures the energetic, electronic-influenced pop sound that helped define Spears’ early career. Its playful attitude and confident delivery complement lyrics about an ex-boyfriend who has apparently found a new girlfriend resembling his former partner.
Rather than expressing heartbreak, the song takes a more assertive approach, with Spears emphasizing that her former boyfriend cannot simply replace her with someone who looks the same.
The recording also offers a glimpse into a particularly memorable period in pop culture. Spears and Timberlake were among the entertainment industry’s most recognizable young couples during their relationship, which lasted from 1999 until 2002.
Their romantic history later became a frequent subject of public discussion, particularly following their breakup. The newly released song, however, dates to the period when the two artists were still together and collaborating professionally.
Although “She’ll Never Be Me” was left off the original *Britney* album, Timberlake contributed to another track on the project, “What It’s Like to Be Me.”
The song’s official release comes ahead of a 25th-anniversary edition of *Britney*, scheduled to arrive November 6. The expanded collection will revisit the album that marked an important transition in Spears’ career, when she began moving beyond the teenage pop image established by her first two records.
The anniversary project will also include additional archival material, including “Am I a Sinner,” “When I Say So” and “My Big Secret,” alongside familiar songs such as “I’m a Slave 4 U,” “Overprotected” and “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman.”
For longtime listeners, the collection offers an opportunity to explore music from one of Spears’ most commercially successful periods, including recordings that never received an official release at the time.
The arrival of “She’ll Never Be Me” is especially notable because Spears has largely stepped away from the recording industry. Her most recent studio album of new material, *Glory*, arrived in 2016, while her last newly released collaboration was “Mind Your Business” with will.i.am in 2023.
Spears has previously expressed little interest in returning to the music business, and the release of archival recordings should not be interpreted as an announcement of a comeback.
Still, the anniversary edition demonstrates how much interest remains in her musical catalog.
Twenty-five years after the original *Britney* album, fans now have another opportunity to hear a previously unavailable piece of the pop star’s recording history, complete with a songwriting connection to one of the era’s most closely followed celebrity relationships.
