Zach Bryan Sets Gillette Record While Wearing “Free Palestine” Shirt

Zach Bryan turned a massive weekend at Gillette Stadium into both a career milestone and a closely watched cultural moment, breaking the venue’s attendance record while once again taking the stage in a shirt displaying a pro-Palestinian message.

The country star performed for 73,538 fans Saturday night in Foxborough, Massachusetts, setting a new attendance record for the home of the New England Patriots. The previous mark belonged to Ed Sheeran, whose 2023 concert drew 71,723 people.

Bryan’s clothing attracted nearly as much attention as the size of the crowd.

For the second consecutive night at Gillette Stadium, Bryan performed in a black sleeveless shirt carrying the words “Free Palestine” and “An Appeal to Heaven,” accompanied by a pine-tree design. Members of his band also appeared in Palestine-themed clothing.

The setting made the message particularly notable.

Gillette Stadium is owned by Robert Kraft, who recently became involved in a dispute surrounding rapper Macklemore’s participation in Ed Sheeran’s tour. Macklemore, a vocal supporter of Palestinians, was removed from the touring lineup after controversy surrounding remarks he made during an earlier performance. Kraft was among the venue owners who raised objections to Macklemore’s continued involvement.

Bryan did not appear to make a speech explaining his shirt or turn the concert into an extended political statement. Instead, the message remained visible throughout his performance, allowing the clothing itself to do the talking.

The Saturday show ultimately produced a headline beyond the controversy. With more than 73,000 people in attendance, Bryan established a new benchmark for Gillette Stadium and surpassed a record that had stood for roughly three years.

It was an unusual collision of music, politics and sheer crowd size. One of country’s biggest touring stars walked onto one of America’s largest stages carrying a politically charged message, then walked away with the venue’s attendance record.

For Bryan, the night added another major achievement to his rapid rise as a stadium-level performer. For Gillette Stadium, it ensured that its new attendance record arrived with considerably more conversation attached to it than just the final number.
