Ted Lasso has honored one of the actors who helped shape AFC Richmond’s story from its earliest days.
The ninth episode of the Apple TV comedy’s fourth season concluded with a memorial dedication to Anthony Head, who portrayed Rupert Mannion during the show’s first three seasons. Head died in June at age 72 following complications from pneumonia.
The tribute arrived at the end of “Mae Rides the Bus,” the penultimate episode of Season 4. It was a particularly emotional installment even before the dedication appeared, as the story also said goodbye to longtime Crown & Anchor pub owner Mae Green, played by Annette Badland.
Head’s Rupert was central to the original dynamics of Ted Lasso. The former owner of AFC Richmond and ex-husband of Rebecca Welton became one of the series’ principal antagonists, with his complicated history with Rebecca helping drive her story from the beginning.
Although Head did not appear in the fourth season, Rupert’s presence continued to hang over AFC Richmond.
The episodes leading into the tribute brought his character back into the conversation as questions emerged about who was attempting to acquire shares in the club. The storyline initially left room for suspicion surrounding Rupert before eventually pointing elsewhere.
That made the ninth episode a fitting point for the series to acknowledge the actor who had brought the character to life.
Head had not filmed scenes for Season 4, and reports indicate the season’s storyline was not rewritten following his death. His absence therefore did not require producers to suddenly redirect an existing Rupert storyline.
Badland, whose own character became the emotional centerpiece of the episode, also remembered her former co-star with affection. She described Head as warm, funny and generous and said she was honored to be part of an episode dedicated to his memory.
For Ted Lasso viewers, the memorial carried an extra layer of significance. Rupert Mannion may have spent much of his time making life difficult for the people of AFC Richmond, but Anthony Head’s performance helped establish the conflicts, relationships and history that defined the club.
Season 4 ultimately found a quiet way to recognize that contribution, allowing one of Richmond’s most memorable figures to be remembered even without appearing on screen.
