Music’s biggest names converged on Los Angeles for the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards, and the Moon Persons were spread across generations, genres and continents.
Snoop Dogg hosted the Sept. 27 ceremony at the Peacock Theater, where Taylor Swift and Madonna emerged among the evening’s most prominent honorees.
Swift claimed Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia,” adding another major VMA to her collection. She also received the inaugural Artist Director Honors, a new distinction recognizing her work as a director and visual storyteller.
Madonna turned the evening into a reminder of her remarkable staying power. She was named Artist of the Year and won Best Album for Confessions II. Her Confessions II – The Film also collected Best Long Form Video, Best Dance, Best Cinematography and Best Choreography.
BTS had plenty to celebrate as well. The group’s “Swim” won Song of the Year and Best K-Pop, while BTS also took home Best Group.
LISA scored a major pop victory with “Dream,” featuring Kentaro Sakaguchi, winning Best Pop. Rising singer Sienna Spiro earned Best New Artist, giving one of the night’s most closely watched emerging-artist prizes to a fresh face.
Madonna added another trophy alongside Sabrina Carpenter when their “Bring Your Love” collaboration won Best Collaboration.
Elsewhere across the genre categories, Cardi B and Kehlani won Best Hip-Hop for “Safe,” while Bruno Mars earned Best R&B for “I Just Might.”
Olivia Rodrigo claimed Best Alternative for “the cure,” and Bad Bunny added another major honor to his career when “NUEVAYoL” won Best Latin. Country music was represented by Ella Langley, whose “Choosin’ Texas” took Best Country.
Ariana Grande also left her mark on the ceremony. “hate that i made you love me” won Song of Summer and Best Visual Effects.
The night was about more than trophies. The performance lineup included Madonna, LISA, RAYE, Shaboozey, Gunna, Sienna Spiro, GENER8ION and Yung Lean. The ceremony also featured musical tributes honoring George Michael and Dolly Parton.
Nirvana received the Video Vanguard Award, adding another chapter to the band’s long relationship with MTV and music-video culture.
Between veteran superstars, current chart leaders and emerging artists, the 2026 VMAs offered a broad snapshot of contemporary popular music. Madonna showed that decades into a career, a pop icon can still dominate the scoreboard, while Swift, BTS, LISA, Grande and a new generation of performers made sure the future was very much part of the conversation.
