New details are emerging in the investigation into the death of actress Hayden Panettiere as authorities continue working to determine what led to her sudden death at age 36.
Panettiere was found unresponsive at a temporary residence in Greenville, South Carolina, on August 16. Emergency personnel responded after a 911 call and attempted to revive the actress, who was in cardiac arrest. She was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities initially reported finding no evidence of foul play or suspicious circumstances. An autopsy conducted the following day also reportedly found no physical injuries that contributed to her death.
Attention has since turned to whether drugs may have played a role.
Investigators are reportedly examining the possibility that Panettiere obtained prescription medication before traveling from Los Angeles to South Carolina. One line of inquiry involves a pill believed to have been sold as oxycodone that may have contained fentanyl.
Those details remain part of an active investigation, however, and authorities have not announced an official cause or manner of death. Toxicology findings and other investigative work will be critical in determining what happened.
The inquiry has also extended beyond South Carolina. Federal drug investigators have become involved as authorities attempt to trace the potential source of any drugs connected to the case.
Brian Hickerson, Panettiere’s on-and-off boyfriend, has reportedly met with federal investigators. He has not been publicly identified as a suspect in her death.
Panettiere had been unusually candid about the difficult chapters of her life. She previously discussed her experiences with addiction, recovery, relationships and the pressures of growing up in the entertainment industry.
Earlier this year, she shared more of that story in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning.
Her career began when she was a child and eventually included some of television’s most recognizable roles. She reached a massive audience as Claire Bennet on Heroes before taking on the role of country singer Juliette Barnes on Nashville. Her film credits included appearances in the Scream franchise.
Beyond acting, Panettiere was also known for animal advocacy, particularly her work supporting whales and dolphins.
She leaves behind her daughter, Kaya.
For now, significant questions surrounding Panettiere’s death remain unanswered. Investigators continue trying to establish what happened in the hours leading up to her death and whether illegally obtained or contaminated medication played a role.
Until toxicology findings and the official investigation are complete, reports about a potential overdose or fentanyl exposure remain unconfirmed pieces of a still-developing case.
