Wendy Williams’ unmistakable voice is headed back into the television spotlight, this time as the subject of a new documentary examining the daytime empire she built and the complicated circumstances surrounding its end.
Peacock has greenlit a three-part documentary with the working title Clap If You Care: The Wendy Williams Show. Scheduled to arrive in 2027, the project will revisit Williams’ journey from radio personality to daytime television powerhouse and explore the cultural footprint left by her long-running talk show.
Williams carved out a distinctive corner of daytime television after The Wendy Williams Show debuted in 2008. Her willingness to dive into celebrity gossip, entertainment news and uncomfortable conversations helped separate the program from the more polished talk-show competition.
Her personality was not simply part of the show. It was the show.
The new documentary plans to revisit that rise while opening the doors to what happened away from the cameras. More than 20 former staff members are expected to share memories and behind-the-scenes experiences from their years working on the program.
Longtime Wendy Williams Show executive producer Suzanne Bass is also serving as an executive producer on the documentary, giving the project a connection to someone who spent years inside Williams’ daytime operation.
Williams herself is not involved in the production.
While the series is expected to celebrate the humor, unpredictability and pop-culture influence that made Williams a daytime fixture, it will also examine the pressures surrounding her success and lingering questions about how her television reign came to an end.
The Wendy Williams Show concluded in 2022 after Williams was unable to return as host for its final season amid health problems. A rotating lineup of guest hosts stepped behind the desk during her absence, bringing an unusually quiet conclusion to a television run built around one of the industry’s loudest personalities.
Interest in Williams’ story has continued well beyond the end of her program. Lifetime’s 2024 documentary Where Is Wendy Williams? turned attention toward her personal circumstances and health following her departure from daytime television, generating significant discussion and controversy.
Peacock’s project appears positioned to take a different route by putting the television show itself, the people who worked on it and Williams’ impact on entertainment culture at the center of the story.
For a host who made a career out of discussing everyone else’s hot topics, Wendy Williams continues to be one herself.
