Phil Collins has shared one of the most personal chapters of his life, revealing that he nearly died during a medical crisis brought on by alcohol abuse in 2024.
The legendary singer and Genesis frontman said his condition became so severe that multiple organs began shutting down while he was hospitalized in Switzerland. As doctors confronted the possibility that he would not recover, his five children were called to his bedside to say what they feared could be their final goodbyes.
Collins later admitted he has no recollection of those emotional moments, explaining that he was unaware of how close he came to death. Looking back, he considers himself incredibly fortunate to have survived.
The music icon spent roughly seven months recovering in the hospital before returning home. He says he has remained sober since the life-threatening ordeal, marking a major turning point after years of battling alcohol addiction.
The health scare came after a long period of physical setbacks. Collins has lived with lasting effects from a spinal injury, nerve damage, repeated knee surgeries and other medical complications that eventually forced him to retire from touring. Although his ability to perform has been greatly limited, he continues to reflect openly on the challenges he has faced.
The experience also strengthened his appreciation for family. After recovering, Collins reunited with his children, describing the time together as especially meaningful following an event that nearly ended his life.
