Lil Durk has secured an important legal victory ahead of his upcoming federal trial after a judge ruled that newly added racketeering charges will not be heard alongside the existing murder-for-hire case.
Federal prosecutors recently expanded the indictment by accusing the Chicago rapper of participating in a criminal enterprise involving acts of violence and drug trafficking. The additional allegations were introduced just weeks before the scheduled start of trial, prompting Durk’s legal team to argue that the timing would unfairly disrupt the defense and jeopardize his right to a timely trial.
The court agreed to separate the two racketeering counts from the current proceedings. As a result, the murder-for-hire case will move forward as scheduled on August 20, while the racketeering allegations may be addressed in a future trial.
The ruling does not eliminate the new charges. Instead, it limits the scope of the upcoming proceedings, allowing jurors to focus solely on the original allegations tied to the murder-for-hire case.
Durk has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, and prosecutors continue to pursue the case. His attorneys maintain that the government introduced the additional allegations too late in the process and dispute the strength of the evidence supporting them.
