WNBA Suspends Alyssa Thomas One Game After Contact With Caitlin Clark

Clark Incident Leads to One-Game Suspension for Thomas

The WNBA has handed Phoenix Mercury forward Alyssa Thomas a one-game suspension after reviewing a physical play involving Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark during Wednesday night’s matchup.

League officials determined Thomas recklessly made contact with Clark’s throat during a scramble for a loose ball, upgrading the play to a Flagrant Foul 2 after the game. Officials did not assess a foul during live action.

Thomas will miss the Mercury’s next game as a result of the disciplinary decision.

The controversy did not end there for Indiana. Clark remained in the game after the second-quarter incident but later exited with a back injury following a separate play in the third quarter. The team has not indicated whether the earlier contact was connected to her injury.

Following the 111-109 loss, Fever coach Stephanie White voiced frustration with the officiating, arguing that multiple dangerous plays involving Clark were either missed or not penalized appropriately. White called for greater consistency in enforcing rules designed to protect players.

The league’s decision has intensified discussion surrounding officiating in the WNBA and the balance between physical competition and player safety. With Clark continuing to draw significant attention as one of the league’s biggest stars, the handling of physical play is likely to remain a major topic throughout the season.
