Sometimes Costco’s Food Court can be a little hit-and-miss, especially when it comes to desserts. But customers have high hopes for their latest addition, the Strawberry Shortcake Sundae.
Even if Strawberry Shortcake Day isn’t for another few weeks (June 14), the new frozen delight has been released during National Strawberry Month (May) AND just in time for Strawberries and Cream Day (May 21).
As Delish reports, the Costco food court’s Strawberry Shortcake Sundae is available now at warehouses for just $2.99. The dessert comes with a generous strawberry-flavored soft serve, strawberry topping, and shortcake bites.
It’s not often that Costco deviates from the usual chocolate and vanilla-flavored soft serve options. The last time the food court debuted a new flavor was back in February, when the warehouse briefly introduced a minty green ice cream for its Thin Mint-inspired sundae. But while that mint flavor was a little divisive with members, strawberry feels like a safer bet for potential fan-favorite status.
Laura Lamb of @costcohotfinds said Costco has the “best strawberry ice cream ever” and argued that this seasonal dessert is among the top three food court desserts of all time. Coming from the unofficial queen of the warehouse, that’s extremely high praise. Other members are ready to try this new treat. “At this point… I’m just gonna move into Costco,” one Instagram user wrote. Another added, “Andddd just like that I’m going to renew my membership.”
While the strawberry shortcake combo may be new, this isn’t the first time we’ve seen strawberry soft serve in the food court. And its return does come with a downside, though: because there’s room for only two flavors at once, chocolate soft serve is unavailable as long as the strawberry sticks around. Still, if this sundae tastes as good as people say it does, giving up chocolate soft serve for a little while feels like a pretty fair trade.
