The blues world gathered in Memphis for another celebration of grit, soul, and guitar-driven storytelling as the 2026 Blues Music Awards honored many of the genre’s most respected performers and rising stars.
Held on May 7 and voted on by members of the Blues Foundation, the annual event spotlighted artists carrying the blues tradition into a new generation while still honoring the music’s deep roots. This year’s nominees reflected a wide mix of styles, from stripped-down acoustic performances to full-throttle blues rock.
One of the evening’s standout projects was “Help Yourself,” the collaborative effort from Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia. The album earned recognition in multiple high-profile categories and continued the duo’s reputation as two of modern blues rock’s most dependable torchbearers.
The Blues Rock Artist category featured a powerhouse lineup including Ana Popovic, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Tommy Castro, and Walter Trout. Contemporary blues also remained fiercely competitive, with artists such as Samantha Fish, Carolyn Wonderland, Vanessa Collier, and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram representing the evolving sound of the genre.
Band of the Year nominees showcased the impressive range currently shaping blues music. Southern Avenue continued building momentum with its soulful blend of Memphis groove and modern blues, while Tedeschi Trucks Band once again demonstrated why they remain one of the genre’s most celebrated live acts.
Acoustic blues maintained a strong presence as veteran artists Doug MacLeod and Eric Bibb earned recognition alongside roots-inspired performers including Rhiannon Giddens. The category reflected how traditional blues storytelling still resonates in an era increasingly dominated by digital production and genre crossover.
The awards also highlighted the international growth of blues music, with nominees arriving from across North America and Europe. That expanding global footprint has become one of the most notable developments in the genre over the last decade.
While the night celebrated winners, the bigger takeaway was the continued health of blues music itself. Veteran legends, modern blues-rock headliners, and emerging artists all shared the spotlight, proving the genre remains alive, loud, and constantly evolving.
