Hurley, the global apparel and lifestyle brand, is releasing its capsule collection inspired by Keith Haring. The capsule blends iconic art with contemporary surf and street style.
As WWD reports, the capsule celebrates the legacy of the late artist and activist, reinterpreting his work through Hurley’s signature Southern California aesthetic. Hurley is a Southern California-based surf and beach lifestyle brand renowned for its innovative performance boardshorts (notably the Phantom line), surf apparel, and youth culture apparel. Founded in 1999 by Bob Hurley, the brand blends surf heritage with modern, stylish, and high-performance, quick-drying materials.
Haring, who died in 1990 at the age of 31, was an artist, filmmaker and performer whose work responded to urban street culture of the ’80s. During a brief but intense career that spanned the 1980s, Haring’s work was featured in over 100 solo and group exhibitions. In 1986 alone, he was the subject of more than 40 newspaper and magazine articles. He was highly sought after to participate in collaborative projects ,and worked with artists and performers as diverse as Madonna, Grace Jones, Bill T. Jones, William Burroughs, Timothy Leary, Jenny Holzer, Yoko Ono and Andy Warhol. By expressing universal concepts of birth, death, love, sex and war, using a primacy of line and directness of message, Haring was able to attract a wide audience and assure the accessibility and staying power of his imagery, which has become a universally recognized visual language of the 20th century.
“Hurley has always been rooted in the energy of surf and street culture, and this collaboration is a natural extension of that DNA,” said Joey Gabbay, chief executive officer of Bluestar Alliance, Hurley’s parent company. (The brand was acquired by Bluestar Alliance in October 2019 from Nike Inc.) “Bringing Keith Haring’s iconic visual language into our world allows us to create pieces that are bold, expressive and deeply connected to the spirit of individuality. The collection honors his legacy while inspiring a new generation to embrace creativity in everything they wear.”
The capsule collection features an assortment of men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, reversible swimwear, headwear and other items. Each piece is infused with Haring’s bold lines, energetic figures and vibrant motifs, bringing a fresh artistic take to beach day essentials.
News of a capsule collection in the works was first reported in WWD last July. The Hurley x Keith Haring capsule collection is being sold at hurley.com and in select retail stores. Price range from $30 to $100.
