The NFL offseason has barely begun, yet the league’s trade market is already producing moves that could reshape multiple contenders.
Two deals in particular have grabbed the spotlight, sending wide receiver DJ Moore to Buffalo and cornerback Trent McDuffie to Los Angeles. Both transactions reflect teams trying to balance short-term competitiveness with long-term roster strategy.
Buffalo’s move signals a renewed attempt to give quarterback Josh Allen a true perimeter playmaker. Since the departure of Stefon Diggs in 2024, the Bills have experimented with several receivers but have yet to find a consistent No. 1 option. Moore arrives as a proven veteran with multiple 1,000-yard seasons earlier in his career.
The cost to acquire him was a second-round draft pick, with the Bears sending back a fifth-round selection in the exchange. Chicago’s decision comes after investing heavily in younger pass catchers, including recent high draft picks and emerging offensive weapons. With Moore’s role shrinking and his production declining, the team opted to convert the veteran receiver into draft capital and financial flexibility.
For Buffalo, the gamble extends beyond draft picks. Moore carries a sizable contract commitment, and the Bills have guaranteed portions of future salary that could keep him on the roster for several seasons. If Moore returns to his previous form, the move could stabilize a receiving corps that struggled to produce consistent explosive plays last year.
While Buffalo looked to upgrade its offense, Los Angeles made a major defensive addition.
The Rams acquired All-Pro cornerback Trent McDuffie from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a significant package of draft picks, including the 29th overall selection in the upcoming draft along with multiple later selections.
Los Angeles had clear needs in its secondary, particularly at cornerback, where the team cycled through several options last season without establishing a long-term solution. McDuffie offers versatility that fits well within the Rams’ defensive approach. He has proven capable of playing outside, covering the slot, blitzing, and contributing as a reliable tackler near the line of scrimmage.
Kansas City’s motivation centers on future roster building. By trading McDuffie, the Chiefs gain valuable draft assets while also preparing for future salary commitments elsewhere on the roster. The deal gives them additional flexibility heading into a draft where depth and long-term planning are key priorities.
Together, the two trades highlight the contrasting strategies teams often employ in the early days of the offseason. Some organizations push aggressively to address immediate needs, while others accumulate assets with an eye toward sustained success.
Whether these deals ultimately pay off will unfold over the coming seasons. For now, they serve as an early signal that the NFL’s offseason chess match is already underway.
