Quinta Brunson, Bowen Yang Among Top Honorees at GLAAD Media Awards

The entertainment industry gathered in Los Angeles for the 37th Annual GLAAD Media Awards, an event dedicated to honoring the storytellers and performers who help broaden LGBTQ representation across film, television, and digital media.

Among the night’s most prominent honorees was actor, writer, and producer Quinta Brunson, who received the Vanguard Award. The honor recognizes allies who have played a meaningful role in advancing acceptance of LGBTQ people and issues through their work.

Brunson’s recognition stems largely from her acclaimed network comedy Abbott Elementary. The series, set inside a Philadelphia public school, has earned praise not only for its humor but also for the way it includes LGBTQ characters naturally within its ensemble cast. Rather than making identity the centerpiece of the storyline, the show presents characters whose lives simply reflect the diversity of real communities.

The ceremony also celebrated comedians Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers, who jointly received the Stephen F. Kolzak Award. Named for a casting director who fought discrimination and stigma within the entertainment industry, the award honors LGBTQ media professionals who have increased visibility and acceptance.

Yang and Rogers have built a cultural following through their podcast Las Culturistas, where they mix comedy with commentary on film, television, music, and internet culture. Over time, the podcast has evolved from a niche comedy project into a widely recognized platform for queer voices and perspectives in entertainment.

The GLAAD Media Awards, founded in 1990, recognize outstanding media that portrays LGBTQ communities fairly and inclusively. The ceremony spans dozens of categories across television, film, music, journalism, and digital storytelling.

This year’s event also featured a lineup of high-profile performers and guests, including a performance by Demi Lovato and hosting duties from actor Jonathan Bennett.

As the awards continue to highlight creators and performers shaping the cultural conversation, the recognition of Brunson, Yang, and Rogers reflects a broader shift in entertainment. LGBTQ stories and perspectives are no longer confined to the margins of media but increasingly play a central role in shaping the industry’s creative landscape.
