Small Tiles are Stepping into the Spotlight in 2026

Tiles have always had a role to play in design, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms, but in 2026 they’re stepping firmly into the spotlight.

As House Beautiful reports, it’s been all about zellige tiles for the last decade or so, and while it’s true that their handcrafted forms and rich colors are incredibly beautiful, there’s no doubt we could do with a bit of fresh blood on the tile front. This is why a recent crop of mosaic tiles is so exciting (and further proof that everything is getting smaller).

Mosaic tile is any pattern made up of small, individual pieces, such as squares, penny rounds, or micro-hexagons. These pieces are usually mounted on a sheet for quick installation. Mosaic tile is making a major comeback, especially in wet areas. Unlike large-format tiles the high number of grout lines offers excellent grip and slip resistance, which can be perfect for your shower floor.

One specific use combines the monolithic approach with the mosaic style. The same small mosaic tile covers the shower floor and continues all the way up the walls. This technique wraps the space in one cohesive texture, creating a cozy, spa-like cocoon. Mosaic is also perfect for small accents, like lining a cubby or surrounding a mirror.

Mosaic tile design in 2026 continues to evolve beyond simple decorative accents, becoming a defining surface element across kitchens, bathrooms, and multi-use living spaces. This year’s trends emphasize refined geometry, expressive natural stone, and tactile finishes that balance timeless appeal with contemporary character. Marble mosaics, in particular, remain at the forefront, offering depth, movement, and architectural rhythm that elevate both residential and commercial interiors.

Designers are increasingly using mosaic tiles to shape spatial identity—highlighting backsplashes, shower walls, vanity surrounds, and feature floors with intentional patterns rather than uniform fields. From classic herringbone layouts to bold hexagons and intricate basket weave compositions, 2026 is about using mosaics as structured design statements that feel curated and enduring.
