From Syd Barrett to the Stage: Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here Turns 50

Half a century after its initial release, Pink Floyd’s seminal 1975 album Wish You Were Here is getting the deluxe treatment with the upcoming Wish You Were Here 50 edition. Set for release on December 12, 2025, via Sony Music, the anniversary collection aims to give longtime fans and new listeners alike a deeper dive into one of progressive rock’s most enduring records.

At the heart of the reissue is a newly mixed stereo version of “Shine On You Crazy Diamond (pts 1‑9)” — the band’s sweeping, multi‑section tribute to Syd Barrett — now combined into a single 25‑minute piece for the first time. The mix, overseen by longtime collaborator James Guthrie, offers a fresh take on the sequence that originally bookended the album. In addition to this centrepiece, the package includes six previously unreleased studio alternates and demos and a recording of a 16‑song live show from April 26, 1975, at the Los Angeles Sports Arena — both making their first official appearance.

Formats range from 3‑LP vinyl and 2‑CD sets to Blu‑Ray and full deluxe box set configurations, making this edition a collector’s item as much as a musical event. The Blu‑Ray includes concert films from the 1975 tour and a short film by designer Storm Thorgerson, preserving the visual as well as the sonic legacy of the album.

Released during a period of massive success following their breakthrough with The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here explored themes of disconnection, the pressures of fame, and the absence of Barrett — themes that continue to resonate today. With the 50th anniversary now upon us, the band has once again invited listeners to step into the world they created half a century ago.

For devotees of Pink Floyd, this edition offers both nostalgia and new surprises. For first‑time listeners, it offers a refined presentation of a landmark record. Either way, Wish You Were Here 50 stands as a testament to the staying power of one of rock’s great albums.
