International Sloth Day is celebrated every October 20th, and it’s the day to learn more about the world’s slowest-moving mammal, raise awareness about the problems they are facing, and how to help wild sloths. But it’s not just a single day—throughout the entire month of October, which we call “SlothTober,” we celebrate sloths and amplify our work to protect these incredible creatures and their habitats.
Celebrating and Raising Awareness
According to The Sloth Conservation Foundation (SCF), sloths play an important role in tropical forest ecosystems: they are indicators of environmental health and have significant cultural and economic importance in countries like Costa Rica. Sloths are an ‘umbrella’ species: protecting them and the habitat in which they live ultimately benefits a whole host of other species, from poison dart frogs to Great Green Macaws.
However, their rainforest home becomes more fragmented and degraded with each passing day. Sloths are facing numerous threats, but the SCF are actively studying them and developing conservation initiatives to ensure their survival and protect their natural habitats.
10 Incredible Fun Facts about Sloths
Sloths are far from being simple, lazy creatures that just sleep all day. They are complex, mysterious animals with an evolutionary history, features, and characteristics so weird that you might accuse us of making them up. To give you an insight into the misunderstood world of the sloth, Dr. Rebecca Cliffe (SloCo Founder and Executive Director) has shared her 10 favorite cool facts about sloths. Check out these 10 Incredible Fun Facts!
Slow Down and Celebrate International Sloth Day
Besides keeping our forests healthy, sloths inspire us to slow down. They are a valuable antidote to the fast-paced digital world we live in. Like the classic story of the tortoise versus the hare, sloths are living examples of the many ways to be “successful” in this world, and this fact resonates with many people from the International Sloth Community.
You can join the SCF SlothTober and Sloth Day celebrations on their social media pages and participate in their games, trivia, and quizzes. Be sure to check out your local environmental organizations or zoos to see if they’re hosting any related activities. And of course, you can simply relax on your couch, take a nap, and spend the day chilling and unwinding—or just doing nothing at all!
