Luke Combs reminded fans that vulnerability is strength during a moving moment at the Newport Folk Festival on July 26. While performing “Whoever You Turn Out to Be,” a tender ballad from his 2024 album Fathers and Sons, the country star was brought to tears mid-song.
The emotional lyrics—particularly, “But you ain’t gotta change the world to make your daddy proud”—struck a chord with Combs, who paused briefly to wipe his face and regain composure. “Sorry. That got me a little bit,” he admitted to the cheering crowd, before adding, “I don’t apologize, because I was in the moment.”
The track, a heartfelt message to his two sons, Tex and Beau, captures Combs’ journey through fatherhood and the delicate balance of fame and family. In interviews, he’s been candid about prioritizing parenting over performance, sharing, “I want my kids to know that my job is not more important than they are.”
Though Fathers and Sons hasn’t charted like his past records, Combs says its emotional weight is what matters. The audience’s support during this raw moment only affirmed why: fans don’t just hear his songs—they feel them.
